Day 1: Arrive in Colonia del Sacramento

Welcome to Uruguay! Arrive in Colonia del Sacramento and meet your private guide for a transfer from the port to your hotel in the Old Town. In the afternoon, enjoy a private walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, a city founded by the Portuguese and once contested by both Spanish and Portuguese empires.

Stroll along cobblestone streets lined with colonial buildings and visit landmarks such as the old city gate (Portón de Campo), the historic Calle de los Suspiros, charming plazas, and the Iglesia Matriz. Conclude your tour with a traditional mate tasting, learning about the customs and rituals surrounding Uruguay’s beloved national drink.

The Charco Hotel is located in Colonia del Sacramento, in a privileged riverfront location. The hotel features seven unique guest rooms and a bistro with outdoor seating overlooking the water.

Day 2: Carmelo Wineries

Depart Colonia del Sacramento for Carmelo, with visits to two wineries along the way. First visit Bodega El Legado, a small, family-owned winery with fine, limited-edition wines. Enjoy a guided tour of the vineyards, cellar, and production area, followed by a tasting of three wines paired with local cheeses, salami, and olives.

Continue to Bodega Cordano, a fifth-generation winery. Visit the vineyards and production facilities, then stop at Almacén de la Capilla, a charming vintage grocery store founded by the Cordano family in 1855. Conclude with a tasting of three of their signature wines and a homemade lunch featuring regional flavors.

Narbona Wine Lodge is a boutique hotel with 5 unique guest rooms, each overlooking the winery or vineyards. Each suite features a King size bed and a balcony or private terrace. The hotel has beautiful common spaces, including an antique cellar, colonial courtyard, and pool room. Your stay also includes a daily tasting of Narbona's excellent wines. Although it is a Relais & Châteaux property, the lodge is more rustic then their usual offerings.

Days 3-4: Carmelo Wine Region

Enjoy two full days at Narbona Wine Lodge. Choose from a range of activities over these two days, including grappa making, lending a hand with the production of wine, having a gourmet picnic in the scenic vineyards, enjoying a tasting menu with a wine pairing at the onsite restaurant, and sampling Narbona’s exquisite wines and cheeses.

Day 5: Travel to and Tour Montevideo

Today you’ll depart Carmelo and travel to Montevideo, Uruguay’s lively capital. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch at the Port Market, a bustling market hall filled with traditional asado grills and local restaurants. After, set out on a walking tour of Montevideo’s Old City, exploring its history and neoclassical architecture. Visit Independence Square and continue along Sarandí Pedestrian Street to Matriz Square, where you’ll find the Cathedral of Montevideo and the historic Cabildo.

In the afternoon, visit two museums of your choice – options include the MAPI Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art, the Torres García Museum, and the Gurvich Museum – each offering a distinct perspective on Uruguay’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Hotel Montevideo is a stylish boutique hotel in the heart of Uruguay’s capital, combining contemporary design with vintage details. Rooms and suites feature oak floors, marble bathrooms, and large windows overlooking the city or Río de la Plata. The hotel includes a rooftop bar and restaurant with panoramic views, a fitness center, and a library lounge.

Day 6: Explore Montevideo: History, Culture, and Wine

Meet your guide this morning for a tour of modern Montevideo. Unlike the narrow streets of the historic center, the Ciudad Nueva features wide, tree-lined avenues and grand architecture. From Independence Square, admire the surrounding mix of styles before continuing along Avenida 18 de Julio, Montevideo’s main thoroughfare. Visit Plaza Fabini and take in views of the impressive marble Palacio Legislativo.

Continue through green parks and residential areas in the “Open City,” passing notable landmarks. You’ll also visit the studio of Lobo Núñez, an Afro-Uruguayan drum maker and percussionist considered a legend in the candombe tradition.

In the late afternoon, enjoy a private visit to the home of Manuel Filgueira, owner and winemaker of Los Nadies, a boutique winery. Get to know the artist behind the wine as Manuel shares his philosophy and process over a tasting of his handcrafted red and white wines. The evening concludes with a home-cooked dinner with Manuel and his family.

Day 7: Olive Tasting, Country Lunch, and Travel to José Ignacio

Depart Montevideo this morning and travel toward José Ignacio, stopping en route at Olivos de las Ánimas, a scenic olive plantation set in the rolling foothills of Cerro de las Ánimas (“Hill of the Souls”). Here, you’ll be welcomed by Martín Robaina, one of the founders, and learn about the cultivation and pressing process before enjoying a guided tasting of the estate’s different olive oil varieties.

Savor a homemade lunch prepared by Martín at his family home, accompanied by warm hospitality and views of the surrounding countryside. The area is also rich in wildlife; keep an eye out for colorful red and blue cardinals, graceful rheas, and other native species as you continue your journey to José Ignacio.

Bahia Vik is a beachfront property in Jose Ignacio, a fishing village that has been transformed into Uruguay's premier beach destination, about 30 minutes up the coast from the more heavily-developed Punta del Este. The hotel has 10 suites and 11 bungalows, all facing the ocean. Guests can enjoy four swimming pools, stand-up paddleboarding, horseback riding, and relaxation on the pristine beach.

Day 8: Cabo Polonio

After a morning drive to the small Village of Valizas, enjoy a barefoot trek across the sand dunes to the village of Cabo Polonio, where you can visit one of the largest sea lion colonies in South America. After a walk of approximately 3 hours, you’ll arrive to breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the raucous barks of hundreds of sea lions and fur seals. Enjoy a seaside lunch before returning through the sand dunes on a 4×4 vehicle.

Day 9: Biking and Kayaking in José Ignacio

Begin the day with a guided bike ride to José Ignacio’s lighthouse and Main Square before following Route 10 toward La Lengüeta at Laguna Garzón. Stop at the lookout to admire views of the circular bridge, then continue along rural trails past private estancias to reach the Anastasio Stream.

From here, trade your bike for a kayak and paddle into the lagoon, a peaceful haven for birdlife where flamingos, swans, herons, and storks can often be seen. Enjoy a traditional countryside picnic at a rustic barn before cycling back to José Ignacio, taking in the tranquil scenery along the way.
