Welcome to Indonesia! Arrive in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city. The city’s historic Dutch quarter still reveals traces of its colonial past, from 300-year-old Berlage buildings to the atmospheric Kampung Arab, where narrow lanes wind past spice shops and the air is rich with the scent of cloves and coffee. With its recent urban revitalization – cleaner rivers, restored parks, and renewed public spaces – Surabaya offers a glimpse of Indonesia’s evolving spirit.
After clearing immigration, meet your private guide, who will be waiting with a sign bearing your name. Transfer to your hotel, a restored colonial-era landmark originally opened in 1910 as the “Hotel Oranje.”
Hotel Majapahit in Surabaya is a historic colonial landmark built in 1910, known for its Dutch-Indies architecture and lush courtyards. The hotel features elegant rooms and suites with period furnishings, a spa offering traditional Javanese treatments, a large outdoor pool, and several restaurants including the classic Indigo Restaurant and Sarkies for fine dining. Facilities also include a patisserie, fitness center, and extensive gardens that evoke the grandeur of early 20th-century Indonesia.
Begin your exploration of Surabaya with a visit to Kalimas Harbor, a traditional port that remains busy with wooden ships and barges transporting goods along the river. Continue to the Arab Quarter, a lively neighborhood filled with Middle Eastern specialties such as kebuli rice, biryani, and curry. Try local snacks like maryam bread, kebabs, samosas, and dates while taking in the district’s old-world charm and distinctive architecture.
Next, visit the Cheng Ho Mosque, an architectural landmark that combines Chinese design elements with traditional Islamic motifs. Then stop at the Submarine Monument (Monkasel), home to the KRI Pasopati 410, a Russian-built Whiskey-class submarine from 1952, now preserved as a museum showcasing Indonesia’s naval history.
Return to your hotel in the late afternoon for Afternoon Tea at your hotel.
*Includes: Breakfast
Today you’ll depart for Malang with sightseeing stops along the way. Your first visit is to the Wonosari Tea Plantation, the oldest in East Java and now a popular agro-tourism destination. Established in 1998 as part of an initiative to promote sustainable plantation tourism, it offers scenic views of rolling tea fields and the opportunity to learn about local tea production.
Continue to Malang and check in to your hotel. In the afternoon, take a leisurely drive along Ijen Boulevard, one of the city’s most beautiful streets, shaded by large trees and lined with graceful colonial-era homes. Then visit Kampoeng Heritage Kajoetangan, a historic neighborhood known for its Javanese architecture and lively street culture. Stroll through its narrow lanes, explore preserved heritage houses, and sample local snacks.
Hotel Tugu Malang is a boutique heritage hotel in East Java, filled with antiques and art pieces reflecting Indonesia’s colonial and cultural history. Set near the city’s central square, it features individually decorated rooms and suites, a spa offering traditional Javanese treatments, and a swimming pool surrounded by tropical gardens. Dining options include a restaurant serving Indonesian and Peranakan cuisine, a rooftop lounge, and a tea house specializing in local blends. The hotel also hosts art exhibitions and cultural performances.

This morning you’ll travel to Tumpang, where your open-air Jeep awaits. Continue across the region’s famous “Sea of Sand,” a vast expanse of volcanic terrain that leads into the Bromo caldera. Cross the open plain and climb the staircase to the rim of Mount Bromo, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the active volcano and the surrounding landscape.

After breakfast, transfer to the Probolinggo train station for your journey through East Java’s striking countryside to Banyuwangi. En route, pass through Kalibaru, a small highland town set in the foothills of Mount Raung. Surrounded by coffee and cocoa plantations, Kalibaru enjoys a cooler, more fertile climate than much of the region and offers a glimpse of rural life in Java’s plantation belt. Early this morning, set out on a 3.5-hour trek to the magnificent Ijen Crater. The hike involves a steady two-hour ascent followed by a 1.5-hour descent through scenic mountain trails. At the summit, 9,500 feet above sea level, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the turquoise sulfur lake and its otherworldly reflections. The trek is rated easy to moderate but can be demanding in sections due to steep terrain and sulfur exposure.
Those wishing to witness the famous blue fire phenomenon may opt for a midnight departures. Please note that all visitors must present a health certificate confirming they are fit for the trek, free from asthma or heart conditions; this can be obtained locally the day before.
After descending from the crater, return to your hotel to relax and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Begin the day with a visit to Banjar Village, a quiet and authentic corner of Banyuwangi rarely seen by travelers. Stop at small, family-run workshops where locals produce batik and traditional cakes, learning about their craft and daily life as you meet members of the community. Enjoy a midmorning break with coffee or tea and local snacks served in a village home.
Continue with a gentle walk through the surrounding countryside, passing rice fields, small rivers, and open farmland. Along the way, you may visit a traditional palm sugar maker who still uses age-old methods. The walk concludes at a peaceful rice terrace, where a simple, home-cooked lunch is served.
